Leaving Stiles behind was the hardest thing John had ever done next to carrying on after his wife's death. He drove away in total silence, the empty passenger seat on his right a painful reminder that he left behind his son in a place he didn't deserve to be.
He couldn't go home. Home would be too empty, too quiet just like his car. He could go to work and endure the pitying looks of his deputies. He didn't want that. A bar would just be an even worse idea because drinking alone was a slippery slope.
Melissa's car was in her driveway so he pulled in behind it, parked and walked to the door. He hesitated a moment before he knocked but he did follow through with three quick knocks with his knuckles.
